Based on the data of China Family Financial Survey and the loan transaction data of a nationwide commercial bank, this paper conducts an empirical study on the gender differences in consumer credit and confirms that the gender paradox in consumer credit does exist in our country. This paper finds that: (1) women have lower default rates on loans than men’s; (2) women are more difficult to obtain consumer credit than men; and (3) the more self-rated women are harder to get loans. This paper argues that the main reason for this contradiction is that credit policymakers have discrepancies between the cultural values and the economic values when evaluating loans.
