圪丑沟秃尾河的源头,沟底是一条弯弯曲曲的简易小路,沟口叫沟岔,中部叫中沟,沟尾叫沟掌,到了沟掌,就到了毛乌素沙漠的边缘。圪丑沟全长20公里,到了沟掌,其实就看到了远处的沙漠。这里原来是寸草不长的荒沙,如今已是满目绿茵。这绿茵之中,有一排简陋的平房,这就是陕西省神木县生态保护建设基地的办公区。这片世外桃源般的办公区占地3500平方米,有64间平板房,就这64间毫不起眼的简陋平房,却统领着42.8万亩沙漠的绿化工作。
