Kashin-Beck disease is a endemic disease, the cause is unknown. In the research on the prevention and treatment of endemic diseases, our scientists found that selenium deficiency is an important factor causing Kashin-Beck disease. However, the lack of selenium in the environment can not satisfactorily explain all aspects of the current epidemiology (hereinafter referred to as “epidemic disease”). Soviet scholars in 1977 proposed Kashin-Beck disease is a genetic disease. In 1985, the authors surveyed 3165 families with different population in this area to verify the family aggregation of the disease. The results suggest that there may be genetic elements sensitive to selenium deficiency in members of the family with the onset of bones.
