Martin gave me the first impression is his voice on the phone. An Australian speaks better than me in Chinese and makes me suspect that this call was made by someone else on his behalf. As a Chinese writer, many of the “foreigners” I have come into contact with are Chinese but generally accented. It’s OK to talk face-to-face, but it’s in trouble to call and look without body language. So the French translation of my novel calls me from Paris and lets his Chinese students play on their behalf. This is wise.
