In response to the urgent need for high-purity cobalt in the market, the vacuum induction refinery (VIR) of ZCCM was put into operation in December 1982. The plant has a 4.1t / furnace vacuum induction furnace, the annual production capacity of 2500t billet. In a vacuum induction refining furnace, the molten cobalt is maintained at 1600 ° C in a vacuum to remove the volatile impurity elements by distillation. So far, production practice has proved that the distillation rate of lead, zinc and cadmium is higher (greater than 95%), and the above elements in cobalt are reduced to below 1ppm or 1ppm. Other impurities, such as selenium and bismuth, are removed by about 65%. Finished product analysis shows that each of these elements is about 1 ppm each. The cobalt vacuum refining process produces high-grade cobalt from various concentrates and is also the more economical alternative to the various processing methods used by Zambian United Copper Corp. The consistent quality of vacuum-induced refined cobalt has been confirmed by Zambian copper companies and cobalt alloys.
