西征战役在整个长征研究中具有三方面的重要意义:一是与长征研究一样,最本质的体现着抗日民族统一战线这个根本以及这面旗帜下具体生存方式的变化;二是有效地奠定了三大主力红军长征胜利会师也即三大主力红军聚集的基础;三是把原有的陕甘革命根据地进一步扩大成了陕甘宁革命根据地,从而为下一步粉碎国民党蒋介石的“进剿”以及与之进行划分防地的谈判打下了基础。不断加强这三方面的研究,无疑是长征研究的重要组成部分并对深化长征研究有着积极推动作用。
