浪漫主义作为一种创作手法自古有之,直到19世纪则在哲学及文学等领域拥有了系统的阐述和发展。从发生学的角度讲,根植于“两希”文化传统的西方文学一直在诉说着人类历史进程中历史理性与人伦情感的二律背反,而继高扬理性主义的启蒙运动之后的浪漫主义运动,则试图通过象征人伦情感的基督教文化来抚慰这种情感伦理的撕裂所造成的巨大痛苦。因此,19世纪的欧洲浪漫主义运动不仅仅是一种人性与自然的回归,也是一种宗教信仰的回归和对历史理性的超越。
