Objective To observe the protective effect of tea polyphenols (TP) on the damage of testicular tissue in rats induced by chronic alcohol intake and to provide some theoretical basis for prenatal and postnatal care. Methods Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups. The sperm density, sperm motility and sperm deformity in the seminal fluid of the rats were measured. The contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase Enzyme (GSH-px) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) content. Results Compared with the alcohol group, the sperm concentration increased, the sperm motility increased and the sperm deformity rate decreased in the TP + alcohol group. The ROS and MDA levels in testis tissue were significantly lower (P <0.05), while the activities of SOD and GSP-px were significantly increased (P <0.05). Conclusion Long-term chronic alcohol intake has the effect of oxidative damage on testicular function. TP can be used as a preventive anti-oxidant to reduce this oxidation, and its mechanism is related to scavenging free radicals and inhibiting lipid peroxidation.
