1997年12月2日,中国驻美大使李道豫的夫人叶兆烈同志因患癌症,医治无效,不幸逝世,终年66岁。 驻美使馆的同志们难以接受这突如其来的噩耗,仅仅一个月前,叶兆烈还笑容可掬地出席了江泽民主席对美国事访问的多场重要活动。虽然一段时间以来,大家知道叶兆烈的身体一直不太好,但没有想到她的病情如此严重。事后人们才知道叶兆烈是忍着巨大的病痛,以常人难以想象的坚强毅力,把自己生命的最后时光和对祖国外交事业的无限热爱,全部倾注到了外交工作和外事活动中去的。
