The relay race is of special significance both for the country and for the Olympic team. For the country, the Olympic Games swimming relay race is their main measure of the strength of the swimming community. The more wins a nation has in a swimming relay race, the more likely it is to win a personal swimming competition and the more likely it is to be a swimming country. The 2012 London Olympic Games swimming relay and the entire Olympic history reflect the overall dominance of the United States in the swimming program. At the London Olympics, the U.S. team topped the entire medal standings, winning most of the relay and medal relay events. A total of seven countries topped the London Olympics swimming relay medal list.
