1994年4月,美国洛杉矶喜瑞都市政府举行大选,49岁的议员胡张燕燕女士当选为副市长。一位华人女移民成为美国地方政府的官员,这件事一时间为人们津津乐道。胡张燕燕1945年生于山东省海阳县,1949年随家人迁往台湾。从小聪明、倔强的她,凭着勤奋和毅力,读完了小学、中学,后考入辅仁大学法律系。毕业后,她选中空中小姐这个职业,在华航公司一干就是数年。空中的服务工作,锻炼了她应对世间事变的本领,同时也开拓了自己的视野。为了进一步深造,她毅然辞去公职,同丈夫胡天来先生相携赴美,入旧金山州立大学留学。这所大学是当地有名的高等学府。胡张燕燕十分珍惜这来之不易的求学机会,全身心地投入学业,并利用晚上和假日到旧金山市区的一些餐馆打工。几年的辛劳没有白费,她最后以优异成绩完成学业,走向了开拓事业的征程。她先开起一个炸鸡店,待积累了一定资金后,就把全部资产卖出,独自一人打出“天来地产”的招牌,大张旗鼓地做起了房地产生意。
In April 1994, the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles, held a general election and the 49-year-old member, Ms. Hu Yanyan, was elected as deputy mayor. An immigrant Chinese immigrant became an official of the U.S. local government. This incident has been remembered by people for some time.
