In the face of the unfavorable situation of a slowdown in consumer spending and the global economic downturn, the 2008 U.S. economy will hardly be able to draw a successful conclusion. The pattern of growth that emerged this year - an insatiable first half followed by a weaker second half - contradicted most of the projections made earlier this year.
