In order to prevent mutual interference between neighboring households and to ensure that people can quietly study and rest in the living room, in 1982, China established a residential sound insulation standard (GJll-82), which has been used as the basis of sound insulation design for residential buildings. Afterwards, a large number of actual surveys were conducted on the residential noise level and people’s subjective responses to sound levels. Taking into account China’s national conditions, the allowable noise standards in residential buildings were established (see the Acoustic Design Specification for Civil Buildings). The allowable noise levels in residential buildings are divided into three levels, 40, 45, and 50 dB (A sound level) during the day and 10 nights lower than during the day.
