经过1983和1984两年调查,从山西油松分布区的53个林场的64个天然林分中,采集针叶、球果和种子样本,测定了13个性状和进行生长量的测定与比较分析,结果表明,13个性状林分间的差异达到极显著水平。有的性状与经纬度、气候条件的相呆性也很强。总的趋势是,气候干旱寒冷,针叶缩短变窄,球果和种子翅长、翅宽增大,种子大小和千粒重却由北向南增大加重。各种性状的变异主要发生在三个方向上,即沿山西油松整个分布区长轴由西北经太岳山到东南方向的变异;西部吕粱山,中部云中山、太岳山,东部太行山,同经度下纬度的变异;从西向东同纬度下经度的变异。同时,各性状均存在着随机变异的现象。在年生长量上,也呈现由北到南和从西向东逐渐增加的趋势。尤其是胸径的年生长量与经度呈显著的正相关,随着经度的增加,胸径年生长量越粗。
