《中庸》、《大學》被收入在戴德所編輯的《禮記》中,根據傳統説法,前者是戰國時代子思(孔子的孫子)所作,後者是曾參所作,皆不可考,大體來説是戰國中後期儒家的作品。宋代程顥、程頤將二者從《禮記》抽出,加以編次,朱熹亦對之進行整理,並納入《四書》,影響甚大。就二者的旨趣而言,《中庸》涉及儒家以“中”爲主題詞的道統授受的内容,它表達了儒家所探求的大中至正之道,實即以誠爲樞紐貫通天人的“大學”(“大人之學”)的基本精神,《大學》則涉及這種大人之學的綱領與規模。
