Simple, safe and low damage to reservoirs is the main reason for the negative pressure fracturing of carbonate reservoirs and the application of coiled tubing to horizontal boreholes. The negative pressure and segregation characteristics of the Upper Devonian in the Jean Marie carbonate reservoir in northeastern British Columbia, Canada, make it easy to develop with underbalanced horizontal well drilling. A recent study involved more than 900 horizontal wells that covered all the wells in the area. Both the connecting pipe and the coiled tubing (CT) are used in drilling, both of which have their advantages and disadvantages. Since the cost of the two methods is about the same, simple, safe, and low reservoir formation damage can be a major source of power for coiled tubing drilling. Penn West Energy Trust drilled a large number of wells using both techniques and conducted an effective comparison.
