在主要华裔美国女性作家汤婷婷、谭恩美、任碧莲的作品中,母亲形象大都坚强、鲜活、丰满,而父亲形象则显得苍白、软弱甚至可有可无。从女性主义东方主义的视角解读这些父亲形象,可以看出他们总是处于缺失、弱化或恶魔化的边缘状态。这些形象一方面迎合了美国主流文坛对华裔整个族群女性化、阴柔化的刻板印象,另一方面又隐含着东方男权制度下的男性凶残无道而女性软弱无助,只有来自第一世界的救助才能使她们摆脱悲惨的命运。
In the writings of the leading Chinese-American female writers Tang Tingting, Tan Enmei and Ren Bilian, the images of mothers are mostly strong, lively and full, while the images of their fathers are pale, weak or even dispensable. Interpreting the images of these fathers from the perspective of feminist Orientalism shows that they are always at the verge of being absent, weakened or demonic. On the one hand, these images cater to the stereotyped feminization and softening stereotypes of Chinese ethnic groups in the mainstream American literary world.
