1 # Slab Caster at US Steel’s Gary Plant Since the mid-1082 the widening mold was installed, a new record of mold life and continuous operation has been created. In 1985, the annual output reached 2 million tons. The single-strand slab caster continuously cast 428 furnaces in 15 days; the average life of the mold between rework exceeded 500 furnaces. The 1 ~ # caster in Gary, equipped with its unique width-modulated mold, has made it the most efficient and lowest cost caster in the steel industry. The mold was developed in 1981 by the United States Steel Corporation Imperial Plant. It combines the advanced technology of Japanese steel companies, and has its own unique design features.
