Twenty-four white Picea populations representing the entire distribution were determined at 39 ° 23’N, Maryland. The test forests established with these materials collected from a wide area are the southernmost experimental forests. The measured response patterns, especially the high growth pattern, are in good agreement with the patterns obtained from the more northerly determinations: 1) the growth potential of the population of white spruce ranges from south to north decreasing gradually. This pattern is parallel to temperature and rainfall gradients. 2) The group’s potential for growth has shown significant differences at the 9-year-old from the seed; only a slight change in the order of arrangement occurred between the 9th and 20th growing seasons. 3) Genotype × environment interactions have only a small effect on this white spruce assay. 4) The Beachburg provenance grew best in Ontario, Canada, in Maryland, suggesting that this provenance be promoted in the Piedmont.
