在第十一届全国美术展览筹备时,新疆维吾尔自治区美术家协会收到的初选作品中,国画、油画以及水彩画、粉画,每个画种都有几百件,而作为曾经的传统“大画种”版画,只有几十件,不仅远远落后于中国画和油画,而且已经远落后于所谓的小画种水彩画。此次全国美术展览送交作品的数量对比,揭开了新疆版画艺术现状的一角。在当前的新疆版画艺术现状,首先是版画艺术创作人员极度匮乏。在新疆地区,包括生产建设兵团,专门从事版画创作的人员约二十人,如果算上业余爱好者,总人数也不会超过五十人,虽然新疆艺术学院设有版画系,但版画系学生在四年毕业后几乎没有人再从事版画创作。
