The authors simulated exposure of 5 adult cats to an altitude of 5 500 m. After 3 to 4 weeks, carbon dioxide hypoxia responses such as carbon dioxide hypoxic ventilation (HVR) and carotid sinus nerve (CSN) were measured. Results: After 3 to 4 weeks of exposure, HVR was significantly reduced. The value of HVR slope parameter A decreased from 53.9 ± 10.1 before exposure to 14.8 ± 1.8 (p <0.05) and from 50.2 ± 8.2 to 8.5 ± 1.8 (p <0.05) in anesthetized cats. The P_ (ET) CO_2 decreased from 4.44 ± 0.16 to 3.74 ± 0.17 kPa when the non-anesthetized cats inhaled hypoxic air. To exclude that part of the effect of low carbon dioxide on HVR, the authors measured
