《敕勒歌》的原文我们不得而知,被翻译为汉语后,广为流传,其轻盈舒张,堪称妙境。王国维在《人间词话》中评论《敕勒歌》曰:“写景如此,方为不隔。”将其与《古诗十九首》、陶渊明《饮酒》并列。这首歌颂草原和天空的作品被《乐府诗集》保存了下来:敕勒川,阴山下。天似穹庐,笼盖四野。天苍苍,野茫茫,风吹草地见牛羊。敕勒族当时过着逐水草而居徙的游牧生活。畜牧生产以马、牛、羊、骆驼为主,相当繁盛。
