While Microsoft is still making every effort to make Windows 2000 a manageable operating system, it has not forgotten that it will introduce an upgraded version of SMS (System Management Server) next year. Microsoft plans to provide an enhanced network identification technology in SMS, including identifying Mac devices and devices from Cisco, Bay, and 3Com. The person familiar with the company’s plan said that the upgrade version was SMS 2.0, code-named “Emerald”. It will integrate Windows NTDS and Intellimirror technology, OnNow support, multi-channel broadcast support and more. By using OnNow, the user can set the network’s schedule to wake up the client-installed software at the specified time. Multi-channel broadcast support enables site-to-site and site-to-distributed site packet processing, allows data to be downloaded to multiple subsites, and reduces traffic between sites and between distributed sites. Microsoft will also provide users with a tree structure, proxy support, and NT event queries. In addition SMS 2.x will provide support for ATM and COM, so you can integrate Office and Visual Basic source code. Microsoft plans to closely integrate SMS with Windows 2000, codenamed “Diamond,” and will use Windows 2000’s Active Directory technology.
