报春花在自然条件下开花于早春,故名。人工栽植,可盛花于元且、春节,为寒冬少花时节增添几分喜气。由于育种家的努力,现已培育出许多优秀盆栽品种,花繁色艳,花期几近半年,观赏价值更高。报春花泛指报春花科报春花属(Primula)的一些观赏植物。我国是报春花的分布中心,世界上报春花属植物约有500种,我国就有300余种,主要分布于西南山区,是著名的高山花卉。其中不少种已引种到欧美,并成为重要的育种材料。目前常见的盆栽品种有报春花(P.malacoides)、四季报春(P.obconica)、藏报春(P.sinensis)、欧洲报春(P.acaulis)及多花报春(P.polyantha)等。
