张恨水可以称得上是中国现代通俗小说史上的集大成作家,现代文学史上“章回小说大家”和“通俗文学大师”。张恨水是20世纪上半叶通俗文学创作的一座高峰,他的名气最大,他的作品最多,他的水平最高,他的作品在广大市民读者中形成了一股阅读热潮,风靡一时,倾倒一时,形成“张恨水现象”。张恨水在中国现代文学史上是一个独特而复杂的存在,尽管40年代后张恨水红极一时,却在文学史上沉寂多年。
