Moniliformin is a toxin extracted from a culture of Fusarium monilifome. This toxin can cause acute heart failure and myocardial damage in rats. In 88 years, Ji Zheng et al. of the Medical Center of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences isolated the toxin in grain from Yunnan and Shaanxi Keshan disease areas, and its content was 40-252 μg/kg. And chemically synthesized this toxin. Van Riley et al. observed that the toxin can cause significant attenuating myocardial contractile function and arrhythmia in both isolated and in vivo rats. We performed ultrastructural studies on acute and chronic myocardial injury in mice and rats caused by Fusarium tumefaciens in order to further investigate the relationship between this toxin and Keshan disease.
