“花脸”,在以往老一辈艺人的演出中并不是由武生担演的,而是独立设一个行当。但自从实施“流制”后,“花脸”都是由武生或丑生担演了,尤其解放以后,粤剧团为了生存,精简改革了行当人员,把一些行当合并了。目前对于粤剧界来说“花脸”这个行当正面临日渐失传,后继无人的境况。因为演花脸要有扎实的基本功,靶子功,台步和体型身段及最重要的深厚唱功,才能演好这个行当。入行学戏的人一般多以学唱薛
