This article presents a study by the BAeSMA Research Institute that uses a simple proactive proximity fuze to identify the closest point (CPA) between a weapon and a target in order to maximize the performance of a small charge weapon. This fuze is based on a small transducer that is common to both transmitters and receivers and which still has full directivity in the horizontal plane and narrow beam characteristics in the vertical plane in the presence of strong ambient noise and sea or seabed reverberation.
