4月8日至12日,联合国第二届老龄问题大会在西班牙首都马德里召开。会上一部由中央电视台记者拍摄的介绍如皋百岁老人生活花絮的专题片播放后,得到了与会各国人士的广泛好评,国外友人纷纷向我国代表团索要这部长寿专题片的光碟。如皋长寿现象引起许多国际老龄问题专家学者的高度关注并成为新闻传媒跟踪聚焦的新热点。中国沿海平原地带唯一的长寿之乡中国人口监测中心2000年初曾发布过长寿之乡或长寿地区的本土标准,即每10万人口中百岁老人应达到3位。于是,如皋市和广西巴马县、湖北钟祥市、四川乐山市、新疆克依地区、辽宁辽阳兴隆村一起,被列为全国六大长寿
