An International Symposium on Selenium and Tellurium in the Environment was held at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, United States, from May 11 to 13, 1976. Twenty-six reports discuss the roles of selenium and tellurium in human health and disease in agriculture, chemistry, biology and medicine. As tellurium does not have important physiological functions, the discussion focuses on selenium. Based on the recent research progress, the conference delegates made a more comprehensive exposition on the role of selenium. The original only know the toxic effects of selenium and carcinogenic effects. After more than 20 years of research, the perception of selenium has undergone great changes. First found that selenium on livestock and poultry and some diseases, such as white muscle disease, chicken exudative quality, pig liver necrosis, a clear protective effect. Some countries are already in low selenium areas
