Oil security is threatened The Asia-Pacific region is currently the world’s fastest growing oil and gas consumption region. From 1996 to 2000, the annual growth rate of global oil consumption was 1.6%, while the annual growth rate of oil consumption in the Asia-Pacific region was as high as 2.8%. The oil consumption in the Asia-Pacific region accounts for about 26.8% of the world’s total. It is expected that the annual growth rate of oil consumption will reach 3.8% between 2005 and 2005.
