INTRODUCTION Since the advent of IBM RAMAC305 in 1956, the state of disk drives has been associated with the growth of computers. In 1962 there was an IBM1311 disk set that was user-loadable and interchangeable. The increased recording density per disc and increased capacity per spindle reduced the cost per megabyte (on-line data), a two-thirds reduction between 1967 and 1970. The increase of data transfer rate, the take-off of the number of arm movements and the shortening of the waiting time of rotation and the improvement of the reliability all improve the performance and the use value of the system.
