The authors of this article point out that the historical materialism established by Marx and Engles brought about a transformation of the whole perception of world - ry. They look into some issues within Marxist materialism,which are related to the un- derstanding of world history as a whole. They emphatically discuss such problems as the transition from national or regional history to world history,the unity and variety of world history,and the relationship between the whole and the parts of world history. They stress that the understanding of world history as a whole progressed along the line form abstraction to concretion and again to abstraction. This cognitive method is consistent both with the logic of scientific cognition and with the objective course of historical development.
