Lin Shu was a character with multiple contradictions and identities in the history of modern Chinese art. In his early years, he was a literati who rejuvenated and opened up and later became an old man in the late Qing Dynasty. He is both a classical translator, a poet and an artist. Lin Shu’s multiple contradictions and multiple identities have aroused the interest of many researchers. His research covers all aspects, but his painting has never caused enough attention in academic circles. Faced with the introduction and prevalence of Western painting in China at that time, he still adhered to the tradition of Chinese literati painting.
