英语中的定语可以位于被修饰的名词(中心词)前.也可位于被修饰的名词后.前者被称为词前定语(premodifiers).后者被称为词后定语(postmodifiers).词后定语大多是词组和从句.其排列顺序较简单、按照“词组在先.从句在后”的语序来处理.词前定语则复杂得多.本文专门讨论词前定语的语序.一、词前定语的类别及其相应位置根据不同的修饰作用,词前定语可分为三类:1.限定性定语(determinative premodifiers).2.描绘性定语(descriptive premodifiers).3.分类性定语(classifying premodifiers).限定性定语由冠词、指示代词.不定代词、数词和名词的所有格等来担任.对中心词进行限定修饰,也就是在特指、泛指或数量方面对中心词起限定作用.描绘性定语由形容词、分词、某些复合词等来担任.在性质、特征或状态方面对中心词起描绘作用.分类性定语由名词、动名词、物质形容词、分词等来担任.说明中心词所指人或事物的本质属性,也就是说明其来源、类别.这三类词前定语的排列顺序请看下表;
