Recently, the world’s nine largest electronics companies announced their joint efforts to the next generation of optical disk systems - Blu-ray discs commercialization, which may lead to a new format war. Now companies agree on the basic specifications of this optical disc system. Originally used for recording high-definition television, this format turned into a turning point for the industry as a whole, offering higher data storage capacity than DVDs. Blu-ray Disc is a writable, 12 cm disc that can hold up to 27 GB of data and record up to two hours of high-definition digital television programming that uses a blue laser instead of the current red laser for recording. Samples of optical disc systems based on blue lasers have been around for more than a year, and currently limiting their commercial development is primarily a cost issue.
