He, a string of flashing footprints, like a string of beating notes, playing a moving piece. In the early days of the liberation, he served as captain of militia units. He had arrested 46 chieftains and seized 20 firearms and fired more than 600 bullets and was hailed as “master of catching bandits.” In 1952, he went to Beijing to attend the National Day ceremony, and was cordially received by Chairman Mao Zedong. In 1960, he attended the inaugural National Militia Campaign, and his beloved Premier Zhou Enlai personally gave him a brand new semi-automatic rifle. By the end of May, we made a special trip to Zhang’s home to find out what he used to be and what it is today.
