Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are found in organic aerosols and some PAH compounds are mutagenic and carcinogenic. Animal model studies have shown that exposure to benzopyrene polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, lung cancer can increase the incidence. Exposure to PAH in the air has become a matter of environmental and occupational health. The metabolite of pyrene in urine is 1-hydroxypyrene, which can be used as a biological monitoring indicator of exposure to PAH.
