父亲离开我们整整五十年了,终年56岁,宏愿未竟,过早辞世,真是遗恨万千!他的历历往事,常常浮显在我的眼前,我忘不了他老人家的谆谆教诲。所幸他的热爱祖国,忠于教育文化出版事业,知难而进的精神,他的光辉业迹,已载入史册,长留人间。父亲是靠着超人的顽强毅力自学成才的。他17岁步入社会,先在南昌,自己集资办《正蒙学堂》八个月。18岁到武昌,结识廖仲恺等革命党人,接受进步思潮,与革命党人组织“日知会”,起草会章,任评议员。又自办书店,出售《警世钟》、《猛回头》、《革命军》等革命书籍。后在汉口《楚报》当主笔,因抨击时弊,触怒当局,《楚报》被查封,他被紧急通缉。父亲说过,当他得知消息时,鞋都来不及穿,一双拖鞋踏上轮船去了上海。到上海以后,除在昌明公司任经理兼编辑外,兼为《申报》、《南方报》作论说,主编《图书月报》。
