Objective: To investigate the relationship between autism children with different degrees of function and blood zinc and blood copper levels. Methods: Thirty children with autism of different functional levels were selected as the case group. 30 healthy children of the same gender and same age were selected as the control group. The levels of blood zinc and blood copper were determined and the levels of serum zinc , Blood copper and zinc / copper ratio, the symptom of case group was evaluated by Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC). Results: The levels of zinc in children with autism were lower than those in normal control group (P <0.05). The levels of zinc in children with autism were negatively correlated with the scores of behavior disorder in children (r = -0.46, P <0.05) (P <0.05). The level of blood copper was positively correlated with the score of behavior disorder of children (r = 0.43, P <0.05), and the level of blood zinc / copper was lower than that of the normal control group (P < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between score of children’s autism behavior scale and zinc / copper ratio (r = -0.54, P <0.05). Conclusion: Children with autism have lower blood zinc levels, higher blood copper levels and a lower zinc / copper ratio, all of which are related to the severity of symptoms in children with autism.
