The National Research Council (NRC) said in a new report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the use of pesticides is still outweighed by the benefits of chemical pesticides that will continue for at least the next decade American agriculture plays an important role. However, the government should encourage the search for products that can be used as alternatives by funding the development of safer pesticides and accelerating the approval of new biopesticides. The report states that chemical pesticides will continue to be required until more alternatives to pest management are known, such as genetically modified crops.
