Between 300,000 and 400,000 people in southern Sudan are now at risk of contracting leishmaniasis (also known as kala-azar). World Health Organization (WHO) experts regard it as one of the biggest epidemic since the history of the record. According to a recent report by the non-governmental organization MSF / Nether-lands, 40,000 people have died and the population of some villages has been reduced by 30% to 40%.
