1928年农历五月,时任中国工农红军第四军三十五团团长的黄克诚,奉命带领部队离开井冈山,回到故乡湘南开展游击战争,几番战斗,部队被打散。黄克诚从死亡线上逃脱出来,巧遇同乡李卜成,李卜成当时也是我党的一名干部。两人结伴秘密混入老家枫树湾的密林中。当时蒋介石以五千大洋的赏金捉拿黄克诚。从此,黄克诚与党组织失去了联系。后来,他决定乔装到上海寻找党组织。
