People’s birth weights vary widely, and the increase in perinatal mortality appears to be related to a significant deviation from birth weight from the population average. If this causal relationship does exist, reducing birth weight bias may reduce neonatal perinatal mortality. Therefore, it is important to reveal the causes of changes in birth weight and to understand the impact of environmental factors, maternal genes and lethal genes on birth weight. The authors studied 5,625 grandchildren of a group of identical and fraternal twins to understand the effects of maternal and lethal genes on these Norwegian birth weight changes
