In order to study the microseism in offshore areas, we designed a new self-floating submarine seismograph (OBS) with a spherical container made of high strength aluminum alloy with an outer diameter of 57 cm, Built with a vertical and a horizontal detector, the depth of 6000 in the sea floor can be safely observed. Magnified seismic signals and time codes are recorded directly on four tape cartridges for a recording time of one month and the frequency response of the recording and playback system is flat within the frequency of 1-15 Hz (-3 dB). The release of the anchor and the locking of the detector are operated by the underwater acoustic signal. So far, our OBS system has been delivered 42 times at sea and they have been safely recycled. Seismic data have provided seismology evidence for several processes related to tectonics along the subduction zone and extension of the ridge (eg, Eguchi et al., 1986).
