塞涅卡生于公元前3年,卒于公元65年,权威的《简明不列颠百科全书》称他是“古罗马雄辩家、悲剧作家、哲学家、政治家”。但从他一生的文字成就来看,也可以说是西塞罗(公元前106-前43)以后最杰出的散文家之一。塞涅卡在政治上曾几度辉煌,但也充满悲剧色彩。公元54年,尼禄正式即皇帝位,塞涅卡以帝师资格成为新帝的主要顾问之一。公元65年,塞涅卡终因涉嫌参与谋杀皇帝的活动被判处死刑。 塞涅卡一生写了很多书,涉及的范围也颇广,有人说他“把手伸到了可以作为研究对象的一切实际领域”。他的著作流传至今的除有《美狄亚》、《俄狄浦斯》、
