1971年3月底4月初,中国乒乓球队参加了在日本名古屋举行的第31届世界乒乓球锦标赛,就是在这次比赛期间发生了著名的中美“乒乓外交”事件。中日关系和中美关系,从一枚小小的乒乓球发端,直至坚冰融化,中美日三国有识之士为此做出了非凡的历史功绩。作为通过民间交往推动官方外交的一个经典案例,“乒乓外交”至今仍发挥着深远的影响。本文作者周斌原是中国外交部高级翻译,31届世乒赛期间担任中国代表团团长翻译,亲历和见证了中国乒乓球队参赛的台前幕后。今年4月正值“乒乓外交”四十周年,他撰文回忆了“小球推动大球”(周恩来语)这一历史事件的部分生动场景。
At the end of March 1971 and beginning of April, the Chinese table tennis team took part in the 31st World Table Tennis Championships held in Nagoya, Japan. It was during this competition that the famous Sino-US “ping-pong diplomacy” event took place. Sino-Japanese relations and Sino-American relations, starting from a small table tennis, until the ice melts, people of insight from China, the United States and Japan have made extraordinary historical contributions to this end. As a classic case of promoting official diplomacy through non-governmental exchanges, “ping-pong diplomacy” still exerts far-reaching influence to this day. Zhou Bin was originally a senior translator of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the 31st World Table Tennis Championships, he was the head of the Chinese delegation translating, witnessing and witnessing the scenes of the Chinese table tennis team participating in the competition. In April this year coincides with the 40th anniversary of “Ping Pong Diplomacy,” he wrote an article recalling some vivid scenes of the historical event “Little Ball Push Big Ball” (Zhou Enlai).
