2002年12月27日,中国政府郑重宣布:南水北调东线工程正式开工。 东线的调水,是在扬州附近江都建超级泵站,用强大的电力抽提长江水,经过10余级抽水站,沿运河和与它平行的河道北上,连接洪泽湖、驼马湖、南四湖、东平湖,在山东位山附近经隧道穿过黄河,经华北平原抵达天津。东线一期工程投资320亿元。 中线调水的源头是丹江口水库。
On December 27, 2002, the Chinese government solemnly announced: The East Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has officially started. The water transfer in the east line is to build a super pumping station in Jiangdu near Yangzhou and extract the Yangtze River water with powerful electric power. After more than 10 pumping stations, along the canal and its parallel river northward, Hongze Lake, , Nansi Lake and Dongping Lake. They crossed the Yellow River through the tunnel near Bitian Mountain in Shandong Province and arrived in Tianjin via the North China Plain. The first phase of the project invested 32 billion yuan. The source of midline water transfer is Danjiangkou Reservoir.
