Chinese characters are one of the most important words in the world. This article discusses the illumination conditions needed to read Chinese characters. Japanese scholars have studied the readability of Chinese characters, but their conclusions are not very consistent with China’s national conditions. For this reason, experiments were performed on the Chinese reading lighting conditions. For young Chinese young people with normal vision, under different illumination conditions (50 to 2000 lx), visual acuity was checked against the brightness contrasts of the four most commonly used Chinese print patterns and different quality papers. A diffuse light environment is used in the laboratory to avoid reflection glare. It was found that there is no significant effect of the different dips between the paper and the line of sight on the visibility value. Identifying the object using the entire Chinese character instead of using a single stroke in the font is in line with the actual situation of reading.
