在园艺上,鼠尾草真是一个大家族。从做香料、做药剂的鼠尾草,到路边绿化中常见的一串蓝和一串红,鼠尾草家族为园丁们贡献了无数美丽又坚强的品种。蜂鸟鼠尾草(Salvia coccinea c.),唇形科、鼠尾草属,原产于中南美洲热带地区,耐热而不耐寒,因此一般只作为一年生植物来栽培。蜂鸟鼠尾草有着长长的花管和鲜艳的唇瓣,在原产地它是依靠蜂鸟来传播花粉,这样的花型构造,最适合吸引蜂鸟长长的嘴喙深入到花芯里采蜜。
